Junichiro Tanizaki is called the “Masochist Writer.”
However, other writers, such as Yukio Mishima and Yasunari Kawabata, praised how he used Japanese beautifully.
These two writers write about eroticism as well though.
Tanizaki got married three times. Every time he started dating or married a woman, he used her as a model in his writing.
Chiyo, his first marriage, was quiet, so she was not good enough for Tanizaki who wanted to have more excitement.
Chiyo had a younger sister, Seiko. Seiko was wild and free and different from Chiyo. Seiko is the model for Naomi in A Fool’s Love or Naomi.
Tanizaki found beauty in thirteen-year-old Seiko. He waited until she became an adult to propose to her. He had a dream to raise a girl to become smart and elegant similar to how Hikaru Genji raised Lady Murasaki.
The main character in Fool’s Love (Naomi) Kawai also finds thirteen-year-old Naomi to be beautiful , and tries to raise her to become a smart and elegant woman, however, Naomi did not listen to him. Kawai has a leg fetish and masochistic desire. He lusts for grown-up Naomi’s leg.
He wrote about women he desire each time.
When he was married with second wife, he was in love with a married woman, Matsuko, so he moved next to her. Matsuko is a beautiful lady who looked good in kimonos, and so she became the model of another of his writing, Shunkin Sho. Tanizaki acted like her servant.
The main character of Shinkin Sho, Shunkin, is born into a wealthy family, and she is a self-centered daughter, though, she becomes blind when she is 9 years old. Then, she starts taking
”Ongyoku” (Song accompanied by Shamisen music), so her servant, Sasuke, who is four years older helps her to the class.
Sasuke, who serves Shunkin dedicatedly, takes interest in playing shamisen, so he bought the instrument using all of his savings, and starts practicing secretly.
Shunkin starts teaching Ongyoku to people including Sasuke, however, her sessions are very strict due to her self-centered mind, so her students occasionally cried.
But Sasuke did not think her session were strict and continued learning it.
After a while, gossip spread that Shunkin and Sasuke were seeing each other.
Shunkin delivers a baby who resembled Sasuke, however, she did not admit that the baby’s father is Sasuke. Instead, she said that the baby annoyed her, so the baby was adopted by other couple.
One of her students, Ritaro asked her to go out with him repeatedly, though, she turns him down. One day, Shunkin hits Rintaro’s face with a stick. Rintaro got upset, pours hot water on her face, and her face loses its beauty.
Shunkin did not want to show her face to Sasuke, so she stopped seeing him.
Then, Sasuke pricks his eyes with a needle and becomes blind so he would not be able to see Shunkin’s face. Sasuke, who cannot see, continues to support her for a long time.
The point of the story is “dedicated love”, however, it is actually also the “relationship of sadism and masochism between man and woman.”
On the other hand, in another of his writings, Sasameyuki Matsuko and her three sisters are the models. He expresses Japan’s “traditional beauty” through scenery of the four seasons and the beautiful four sisters wearing kimono. If you don’t like “unusual sexual desire,” I recommend you read this “Sasameyuki”.
Tanizaki once said he wanted a grave stone in the shape of a woman’s leg so that it would look like a woman was stepping on his body, and his taste shows in several sentences in his writings.
His writings had been nominated several times, however, they never won the Nobel prize due to the reason that “Other countries can’t accept his sexual taste.”
You might think like, “What happened to those Japanese writers?” However, Tanizaki’ s beautiful sentences has a high reputation.
Please feel the beautiful Japanese sentences in his writing by reading it in Japanese.
Chapter 2 –
Have you already studied Keigo (Japanese honorific language)? Have you learned the casual speech (an informal way of speaking) used when talking with family and friends?
You know that Japanese has various speech styles.
In fact. In Japanese these styles are very complex and there are a variety of rules and customs in both speaking and writing
Let’s learn about them in this lesson.
(1) The proper use of speech levels (degrees of politeness)
Japanese is a language in which speech levels are very important, so sometimes we have to change our way of speaking depending on whom we are speaking to.
1) All citizens have to pay tax.
2) What you insert within this ( ) must be a particle.
3) I’ve got something I need to look up, so I’m going to the library.
4) I’ve gotta run to the post office, so wait here for a sec.
5) This morning I overslept and ended up being late for class, so I’ve gotta wake up earlier tomorrow.
For example, sayonara (goodbye) and shitsurei shimasu (formal goodbye) or misete ne (show me) and misete itadakemsen ka? (Could you please show me?) – is said to be one of the most difficult things for people studying Japanese.
1) When it comes to (lit. Among) Japanese food, I like sushi and tempura, etc.
2) This semester I’m taking Japanese (language) history and Asian history (and some other classes),
3) I’m thinking of going to Italy and Greece (and other places around there) over summer vacation.
4) Kanji like 生 and 日 have a lot of different readings and it’s hard to memorize (all of them).
5) In Japanese, there are various honorific expressions, like irrasshaimasu and meshiagarimasu.
1) Learning kanji is one of the most important things in studying Japanese
2) It is said that Arabic is one of the hardest languages to learn.
3) Reading is one of my favorite things.
4) Mozart is one of the most popular composers.
1) Who is the person that’s most important to you?
2) One place that I’ll never forget is the cafe where I first met girlfriend.
3) My cat is the most important thing in the world to me, but for my cat it seems like the most important thing in the world Is food.
4) Despite losing his hearing, which is the most important thing for a composer’s work, Beethoven wrote his famous Ninth Symphony.
