私は日本で２０年ぶりに満開の桜を見ました。
I saw the full bloom of the cherry blossom tree in Japan for the first time in 20 years.
アメリカに２０年住んでいましたが、日本に遊びに来るのは、娘が夏休みの時だけだったので桜を見れなかったんです。
I had lived in America for 20 years, and we could only visit Japan in the summer during my daughter’s break.
しかも、２０年前に日本に住んでいた時には、うちの周りの桜はまだ小さい木だったので、今のように綺麗な桜道ではありませんでした。
On top of that, when I lived in Japan 20 years ago, the cherry trees around my house were smaller, so it was not as gorgeous as the street cherry trees.
満開の桜の木の下にいると、坂口安吾が1947年に出版した「桜の森の満開の下」という小説を思い出しました。
When I was under the full bloom of the cherry tree, it reminded me of the novel “Under the full bloom of the cherry tree in the forest” by Ango Sakaguchi.
坂口安吾の作品は、「世にも奇妙な物語」のような不思議な話が多いです。
Sakaguchi wrote many mysterious stories similar to the “Twilight Zone”.
この話は題名のように、満開の桜が出てくる話なのですが、どういう話でしょうか。
Guess what kind of story this is even though you know it’s about the full bloom of the cherry tree.
今の時代では桜は素敵な花と思われていますが、昔はどこか恐ろしげな雰囲気をもつものとされていました。
Today, people think the cherry blossom is beautiful, however, it was considered as somewhat grim a long time ago.
あらすじはこうです。
The story goes like this.
山に一人の山賊がいました。
There was a bandit in the mountain.
彼は山を通り過ぎる男たちを殺しては、旅人の衣服、持ち物、そして女を奪っていました。
He killed men who walk through the mountain, took their belongings and their women.
ある時、美しい女を連れた男が山を通りました。
One day, a man with a beautiful woman walked through the mountain.
山賊は旅人を殺し、その美しい女を奪います。
The bandit killed the man, and he took the beautiful woman.
美しい女は山道を自ら歩く事が出来ないと言うので山賊は女をおぶって、桜の満開の山道を駆け上ります。
The beautiful woman complained that she couldn’t walk on the mountain road, so the bandit carries her on his back and ran through the full bloom of cherry blossoms.
山賊の家には山を通る男たちから奪った７人の女性がいました。美しい女はその女性達を見ると、山賊に殺せと言います。
There were seven women whom the bandit took away from men who walked through the mountain. When the beautiful lady saw the seven women, she asked the bandit to kill them all.
山賊は一人だけ器量の悪い女を残して全員殺してしまいます。
The bandit killed all the women except ugly one.
山賊はこの後、この美しい女に桜の森の満開の下を通る時のような嫌な気持ちになりますが、どうしてかはわかりません。
The bandit had an uncomfortable feeling toward the beautiful woman similar to how he feels when he walks through the full bloom of cherry trees.
こうして、山賊と美しい女と器量の悪い女の共同生活が始まります。
As such, the beautiful woman and ugly woman began a new life with the bandit.
美しい女は器量の悪い女に世話をさせ、やりたい放題の生活を送ります。
The beautiful woman forced the ugly woman to take care of them and did whatever she wanted to do.
その後、山賊と美しい女と器量の悪い女の３人で都に引っ越します。
After a while, the bandit, the beautiful woman and the ugly woman moved to the city
山賊が毎晩人を殺し、その首を持ち帰ると、美しい女はその首を使ってまるでままごとでもするかのように遊ぶようになりました。
Every night, when the bandit killed someone and brought the head home, the beautiful woman played with it like a small child plays with dolls.
そして、欲しい顔があると山賊にねだって殺してもらいます。
Then, whenever she found a head she wants, she asked the bandit to kill that person.
山賊もそれを断る事が出来ず夜な夜な首を取ってくる日々を送ります。
The bandit can’t say no, so he spends time killing people every night.
山賊は山に帰りたくなり、器量の悪い女を残して山へ帰ることにしました。
The bandit wanted to go back to his mountain, so he and the beautiful woman went back to the mountain leaving the ugly woman behind.
彼は、山道を登れないという美しい女を背負い山を駆け上ります。
The beautiful woman said she can’t climb the mountain, so the bandit carried her on his back and ran through the hill.
そして、山の中の桜の森の満開の下をさしかかった時です。山賊は背負っているのが女ではなく、鬼である事に気付きます。
Then, when they were under the full bloom of cherry trees in the mountain, the bandit realized the one he carried was evil, not the beautiful woman.
鬼は山賊の首を絞めてくるので、山賊は全力で取っ組み合い、鬼を絞め殺してしまいます。
The devil tried to squeeze his neck, so, he fought back and he killed the devil.
しかし、その時彼が首を絞め殺したのは、鬼ではなく、美しい女でした。
Then, he realized the one he killed was not the devil but his beautiful woman.
山賊はこれまでになかったほど泣きます。そして、その場所はまさに桜の森の満開の下。
The bandit cried as much as he had never cried before. Then, the place was under the full blossom of cherry tree in the forest.
桜の花びらが二人の上に舞い落ちます。
The petals covered the two of them.
美しい女はいつの間にか姿を消し、山賊の姿もいつの間にか消えて無くなってしまいました。
The beautiful woman disappeared without notice and the bandit also disappeared.
この作品を読んだ時、何とも言えない気持ちになります。
When I read this novel, I feel something that I can’t not express in words.
普段きれいだと言われている桜でも、見方を変えればその美しさゆえの残酷さというか怖さをもあわせもっている様なそんな感じがします。
Cherry blossoms are considered beautiful, however, from a different point of view, the beauty is brutal and grim.
山賊にとっての美しい女というものがその両面を持ったものとして描かれているのだと思います。
I think the beautiful woman has two sides for the bandit, one is beautiful and the other one is grim.
日本人なら聞いたことのあるフレーズにこれがあります。
There is a famous phrase that many Japanese people have heard.
「桜の樹の下には死体が埋まっている」
“Dead bodies are buried under cherry trees.”
これは、梶井基次郎が1928年にかいた詩「桜の樹の下には」の書き出しでもあります。
This is also the beginning phrase in the poem, “Under the cherry tree” written by Motojiro Kajii in 1928.
こう続きます。
It goes like this,
「これは信じていいことなんだよ。何故って、桜の花があんなにも見事に咲くなんて信じられないことじゃないか。」
“You should believe this. The reason is, it’s impossible that cherry tree blossoms gracefully like that without doing anything. ”
今度日本に来るときは、桜が満開の４月の初めに来てくださいね。
When you visit Japan next time, please come in April when you can see the full bloom of cherry trees.

あ、Aさんが飲んだんだ。今日シリアルを食べる時、牛乳がなくて困ったよ。

昨夜は、早く寝れた？
ううん、１時ごろねた。歴史のクラスのレポートを書かなくちゃいけなかったから。
あ、そうなんだ。私も経済のクラスのために、読まなくちゃいけない本があったから、二時ごろ寝た。少し眠い。
ところで、金曜日にスキットプロジェクトのアウトラインを出さなくちゃいけないけど、Aさんのグループはもうアウトラインができた？
うん、週末に書いちゃった。
え、もうかいっちゃったの？早いね。私たちのグループは、まだ全部できてないから、今晩もう一度集まらなきゃいけないんです。
そうか。がんばってね。
もしもしAです。
あ、Aさん。
昨日は会えなくて、ごめん。仕事の面接を受けなくちゃいけなかったんだ。
あ、そうなんだ。
あの、昨日会えなかった代わりに今日、家にこない？
あ、今日はちょっと。。。クラスメートとプロジェクトについて相談しなくちゃいけないから。
あ、そうなんだ。
でも、何時に会うか、まだわかんないから、また後で連絡するね。
