三島由紀夫は日本でも海外でもファンが多いです。
Yukio Mishima has many fans in Japan and overseas.

私は彼を一言で言い表すと、「衝撃的な作家」です。
If I described his character in one word, he is a “Shogeki-teki writer” (Shogeki-teki nahito means “A person who often surprise people”).

衝撃的(しょうげきてき)、というのは、英語に訳すのが難しいです。
It’s difficult to translate “Shogeki-teki” into English.

三島由紀夫の有名な作品は色々ありますが、大学のクラスで初めて勉強した彼の小説は、「仮面の告白」です。
There are several famous writings, though, the first one I learned at university was, Confession of a Mask.

先生から配られたプリントにはこう書かれていました。
The phrase on the paper our professor gave us was this.

「小さい頃の夏の暑い日に、母親に手を連れられて歩いている時に汗をかいた男性が歩いてくるのを見て興奮した。」
“When I was small, I was holding my mother’s hand and walking in hot summer, my heart pounded when I saw a man was sweating.”

この本は、1949年に日本で出版された三島の私小説(ししょうせつ)ですが、この時代のこの日本でのこの文章は、世間を驚かせただろうな、と思いました。
This book is an autobiography which was published in 1949 in Japan, so I guess people were shocked with this sentence at the time.

他人と違う自分をいつも感じていた、「私」が子供の頃から同性愛者(どうせいあいしゃ)であることを告白していきます。
“I” who felt he was different from other people, confesses that he has been homosexual since he was small.

三島には女性の妻がいたのですが、同性愛者の男性と浮気をしていました。
Mishima had a (female) wife, though, he had an affair with a homosexual man.

その彼に細い体を笑われたので、ボディビルダーになって筋肉を鍛えたらしいです。
I heard he became bodybuilder since his boyfriend laughed at his body.

彼は一年かけて海外旅行にも言ったことがあります。サンフランシスコ、ロサンゼルス、ニューヨーク、フロリダ、リオ・デ・ジャネイロ、ジュネーブ、パリ、ロンドン、アテネ、ローマ、に行きました。
He went to an oversea trip for a year. He went to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Florida, Rio de Janeiro, Geneva, Paris, London, Athene, and Rome.

その中でも気に入ったのが、ローマのバチカン美術館で見たアンティノウズ像でした。こういう筋肉に憧れがあったんでしょうね。
His most favorite thing during the trip was to go see the statue of Antinose at Vatican Museum in Rome. I think he longed to have that kind of muscle.

そして、俳優(はいゆう)にもなりました。
Then, he became an actor as well.

しかし、４５歳で自衛隊の基地の中で憲法の改正を求めて、聴衆の前で切腹自殺をして亡くなります。
However, he committed suicide by cutting his stomach when he was 45 years old, seeking to change the Japan’s constitution in front of an audience in the Japan’s self air defense territory.

やはり「衝撃的な人」ですよね。
I told you, he is a “Shogeki-teki person”.

主人公の「私」は、ほかの人と違う自分に悩み、告白していくのですが、ちょっと太宰治の「人間失格」に似ているところがあると思いませんか？
The main character “I” struggled with the belief that he is different from other people, and confesses. It’s a bit similar to No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, don’t you think?

太宰治と三島は交流があったのですが、三島は太宰に、「太宰の作品は嫌いだ。」と言ったことがあります。
Osamu Dazai and Mishima occasionally saw each other, though, once Mishima said Dazai, “I don’t like your writing.”

そのほかの三島由紀夫の代表作としては、「金閣寺」や「潮騒」などがあります。
His other famous writings is, Kinkakuji or Shiosai.

「金閣寺」はまた衝撃的な内容で、吃音(きつおん)を持った主人公が金閣寺が好きすぎて、自分が好きな綺麗な女性まで金閣寺に見えてしまい、最後には美しさが憎しみに変わり、自分のものにしたいという気持ちで金閣寺を燃やしてしまいます。いまだに私には難しい話です。
Kinkakuji is also shocking story where the main character who stammers, was crazy for “Kinkaku temple”, and his beloved woman looked like “Kinkaku temple” to him, then, his affection toward Kinkaku temple changed into hate. Then, he burned out Kinkaku Temple hoping to make it his own. This story is still difficult for me to understand.

一方で、「潮騒」は純粋な気持ちで好きあっている若い男女の話が、美しい自然の描写とともに書かれています。
On the other hand, Shiosai is a story about a young couple who have pure hearts in the beautiful nature.
