日本のバレンタインデーは、チョコレートの会社が始めたイベントなので、プレゼントはチョコレートだけです。
Japan’s Valentines day started by the Chocolate Company to boost their sales, so the present is chocolate only.
バレンタインデーは、女子が男子に告白をするときにチョコレートを渡します。
Girl give chocolate to boy to tell him she is in love with him.
中学生や高校生が一番盛り上がります。
Middle school or high school students enjoy the event most.
私もチョコレートを男子にあげたことがあります。机の中にチョコレートを入れました。日本では、中学校、高校と、自分の机が決まっているので、同じ席に座ります。
I have done it though I put the chocolate in a boy’s desk in the classroom because we have our own desk through the year.
それで、えー、６ヶ月後にその男の子から「付き合ってください。」と言われたんですけど、私は、「もう、あきひろ君のこと忘れちゃった！ごめんなさい！」と言いました。日本人の男の子は、なんでそんなに考える時間が必要なんですかね？
Six months later, he asked me to be his girlfriend, though, I told him that I totally forgot about him. Why Japanese boys need to take time that much to decide his girlfriend?

今日のレッスンは、謙譲語 humble language です！
Let’s review about three kind of 敬語
＜敬語＞
(1) 丁寧語（ていねいご）polite language
です、ます。Just being polite
I will eat it.
これを食べます。
(2) 尊敬語（そんけいご）honorific language
Someone’s social hierarchy is higher than speaker.
For 尊敬語、it describes higher ranking person’s action.
Yakuza boss will eat it.
ヤクザ上司がこれを召し上がります。
(3) 謙譲語（けんじょうご）humble language
Someone’s social hierarchy is higher than speaker. (Same as (2) )
For 謙譲語、it describes lower ranking person’s action.
I will eat cookies that Yakuza boss gave me.
ヤクザ上司からもらったクッキーをいただきます。
はい、今日は（３）の 謙譲語を勉強します。
（２）の尊敬語は先週勉強しましたね。また少しづつ練習します。
At first, let’s memorize special verbs that you have to memorize.
We use these humble verbs, in addition, we conjugate these humble verbs into masu form.
Second one is dictionary form. For some reason, it sounds ninja words. We don’t use the dictionary form nowadays.
食べる・飲むーいただくーいただきます
行く・来るー参るー参ります。
いるーおるーおります
言うー申すー申します
するーいたすーいたします
あるーござるーございます
〜ているー〜ておる。ー〜ております
〜です。ー〜でござるー〜でございます。
You need to memorize these, however, other than these verbs, we use “お＋stem + する”
会うー お 会い する
お stem する

Stem form, 大丈夫ですか？
I met Yakuza boss yesterday.
昨日、ヤクザ上司にお会いしました。
I lend my Ghibli Movie DVD to my Yakuza boss.
昨日、ヤクザ上司に、ジブリ映画のDVDをお貸ししました。
I borrowed Yakuza boss’s golf club sets.
昨日、ヤクザ上司から、ゴルフクラブセットをお借りしました。
じゃあ、よく使う、丁寧語、尊敬語、謙譲語、練習してみましょう！
1．「する」
丁寧語
「します」
例：明日の予定は、キャンセルします。I cancel the plan for tomorrow.
尊敬語
「なさる」、「される」
例：ヤクザ上司は、明日の予定を、キャンセルなさいました。Yakuza Boss canceled the plan for tomorrow.
謙譲語
「いたす」
例：ヤクザ上司、明日の予定は、キャンセルいたします。
Mr. Yakuza, I will cancel the plan for tomorrow.
When I talk with our customer, my Yakuza boss’s position will be lower than our customer, so I will use 謙譲語 about my boss’s action.
お客様、ヤクザが、明日の予定をキャンセルいたしました。
Dear Customer, Yakuza canceled the plan for tomorrow.
I even remove “Mr.” When I talk about my Yakuza boss to our customer.
2．「言う」
丁寧語
「言います」
例：友だちに言いました。I told that to my friend.
尊敬語
「おっしゃる」
例：ヤクザ上司がおっしゃいました。Yakuza boss tole me.
謙譲語
「申す」、「申し上げる」
例：ヤクザ上司に申しました(申し上げました)。I told that to my Yakuza boss.
3．「行く」
丁寧語
「行きます」
例：パーティー会場へ4時に行きます。I will go to the party venue at 4pm.
尊敬語
「いらっしゃる」、「行かれる」
例：ヤクザ上司、パーティー会場へは何時にいらっしゃいますか？What time are you going to the party venue?
謙譲語
「参る」、「伺う」
例：パーティー会場へ4時に参ります(お伺いします)。I will go to the party venue at 4pm.
4．「食べる」
丁寧語
「食べます」
例：食後に甘いものを食べます。I will eat sweets after the meal.
尊敬語
「召し上がる」
例：ヤクザ上司、食後に、甘いものは召し上がりますか？Mr. Yakuza, would you eat sweets after the meal?
謙譲語
「いただく」、「頂戴する」
例：お土産に、甘いものをいただきました(頂戴しました)。I got sweets as souvenor.
5．「来る」
丁寧語
「来ます」
例：もうすぐ友だちが遊びに来ます。My friends are coming soon.
尊敬語
「いらっしゃる」
Actually, there are more using “お 〜なる” to be specific.
「お見えになる」、「おいでになる」、「お越しになる」
Yakuza boss came.
ヤクザ上司がいらっしゃいました。
Others：ヤクザ上司がお見えになりました。 ヤクザ上司がおいでになりました。 ヤクザ上司がお越しになりました。 ヤクザ上司が来られました。
謙譲語
「参る」
例：3時に参ります。I will come at 3pm.
