今、日本で一番の話題は、アイススケートの羽生弓弦くんです。
Now the hot topic in Japan is “Iceskater, Yuzuru Hanyu”
昨日、羽生君は韓国で行われている冬のオリンピックで、ゴールドメダルをとりました。彼は足を怪我していました。
Yesterday, Hanyu kun got a gold medal for the winter olympic. His leg was
wounded.
彼は、2011年に津波があった仙台に住んでいました。当時16歳でした。
He lived Sendai where the big tsunami hit in 2011. He was sixteen year old
at the time.
羽生君はいつもインタビューで、”津波で家族や家をなくした人たちが元気になるように、アイススケートを頑張っている”、と言っています。
Hanyu kun alway say “I am doing my best for people who lost their family
members or house due to the tsunami” during interview.
やっぱり、人のために頑張る人は強いのかもしれませんね。
I guess people who try to contribute others are strong.

<お and ご>
シルビアさんからの質問の「お勉強しました」 について、今日は勉強します。
We are learning about “お勉強しました” that Sylvia san asked.
お and ご 美化語ーbeautified speech
お or ご can be added to some nouns or adjectives to make it sound beautiful.
Before that, let me clarify the difference between 勉強 and 勉強する
(1) Basic verb – 食べる (to eat)
(2) “Noun + する(do)” Verb
For some nouns, it becomes verb if you add する to the nouns.
勉強ーnoun / study
勉強するーverb/ to study
お勉強、お勉強する
出席（しゅっせき) – noun/ participation
出席するーverb/ to participate
ご出席、ご出席する
To the ears of Japanese people, the adjunction of “お” and “ご” adds some
beauty.
However, for Japanese learners, this construction is a bit tricky.
（１）おーadd to 和語（Japanese words) お勉強、お米、お茶、お電話、お肉、お化粧、お暑い、お恥ずかしい、おきれい
（２）ごーadd to 漢語 (Chinese words) ご出席、ご招待、ご理解、ご説明、ご都合、ご住所、ご立派
じゃあ、どれが和語でどれが漢語か？日本人も知らない！ただ、どれに、お がついて、どれに ご がつくか、覚えているだけ。
Then, which one is 和語 (Japanese word) and which one is 漢語 (Chinese word)?
Even Japanese people don’t know that. We just memorize which nouns or
adjective we have to add お or ご.
日本語の文章をたくさん読んでいるうちに、少しづつ覚えていきますよ。
You will memorize it gradually when you read a lot of Japanese sentences.

テニスー noun / Tennis
テニスをする- verb / to play tennis
外来語に”お”をつけると、一生懸命尊敬を見せようとしているようで、面白いです。
If you add “お” to Japanese English, it sounds funny because it’s like the
speaker is trying to show the respect as much as possible.
コメディドラマとかでは言ってるかもしれません。
You might hear that in the Japanese comedy dramas.
それでは、これはどういうでしょう？
How can you say these?
（１）Yakuza boss studied today. (Honorific language)
今日、ヤクザ上司は勉強なさいました。（尊敬語）
（２）I studied today. (Humble language)
今日、私は勉強いたしました。（謙譲語）
Making it sounds even more beautiful with お！
（１）今日、ヤクザ上司はお勉強なさいました。
（２）今日、私はお勉強いたしました。
Yakuza boss played golf today.
◯ 今日、ヤクザ上司はゴルフをなさいました。
X 今日、ヤクザ上司はおゴルフをなさいました。
(It’s wrong, however, this sentence makes me giggle because it sounds like
we make fun of him)

I work at a Japanese bank in LA. It’s a Japan’s mega Bank, and Yakuza boss
is an elite banker who was assigned to work in LA branch for few years. I
am a locally hired employee, so my position is much lower than him, and I
am intimidated by my yakuza boss.
＜わ〜！朝、エレベーターでヤクザ上司と鉢合わせ(はちあわせ）！＞ OMG! I ran into Yakuza boss in the
elevator in the morning!
Hanako: Yakuza boss, Good morning!
花子：ヤクザ上司、おはようございます！
Yakuza boss: Hi, Good morning.
ヤクザ上司：うん、おはよう。
Hanako: It’s getting warmer outside recently.
花子：最近やっと暖かくなりましたね。
Yakuza boss: Yes, it is.
ヤクザ上司：そうだね。
Hanako: Did you do something on the weekend?
週末は、何かなさいましたか？
Yakuza boss: I played golf yesterday. The weather was great and felt good.
ヤクザ上司：昨日は、ゴルフをしたんだよー。天気が良くて気持ちよかったね。
Hanako: Oh I see, you went to play golf! How was your score?
花子：ゴルフにいらっしゃったんですか。スコアはいかがでしたか？
Yakuza boss: My score is getting better and better. California is awesome!

ヤクザ上司：スコアがどんどん良くなってきているんだよー。カリフォルニアは、ゴルフの代金が安くていいね。
Hanako; I agree.
花子：おっしゃる通りですね。
Yakuza boss: Don’t you play golf, Hanako?
ヤクザ上司：花子さんはゴルフやらないの？
Hanako: I don’t play golf, however, I think it sounds fun when I hear
about your story.
花子：私はゴルフはいたしませんが、ヤクザ上司のお話をうかがって、楽しそうだと思います。

Hanako: My name is Hanako from Japan’s Bank. Is there Mr. Saito?
花子：日本銀行の花子と申しますが、斎藤さんはいらっしゃいますか。
Mr. Saito: I am Saito.

Hanako: My name is Suzuki who is an analyst. Thank you for participating
our Yakuza hosted Golf tournament last weekend.

Saito: Thank you too. It was fun. Please say hello to Mr. Yakuza.

Hanako: Certainly. By the way, have you prepared Financial Statement by now?
花子：かしこまりました。ところで、そろそろ決算書はご用意なさいましたか？

日本人も敬語は間違うので、あまり完璧にしようとは思わなくていいです。
Even most Japanese people can’t speak keigo without any mistake, so you
don’t need to master it perfectly.
