(21) Genki 2- Honorific Verbs

みなさんこんにちは、花子です！
今日は二月三日、節分ですね。
It’s Feb 3, it’s the day of “Setsubun”.

節分は春の始まりのことなんですが、その時に悪い運が入ってきやすい、ということで、豆をまいて鬼が入ってこないようにします。
Setsubun means the beginning of Spring. It says, bad luck easily come, so we throw roasted soybeans so that evil can’t come in.

豆をまきながら、”鬼は外、福は内”と言います。みなさんもやってみてください。
We say “Demon out, luck in”while throwing roasted soybeans. Please try to do it.

今日は、 ”尊敬語（そんけいご）honorific language”　について勉強します。

敬語の種類は３つあります。
Japanese can be separated into three levels of politeness.

(1) 丁寧語（ていねいご）polite language

(2) 尊敬語（そんけいご）honorific language

(3) 謙譲語（けんじょうご）humble language

ちょっとこの違いについて説明します。
I will explain about the differences a bit.

(1) 丁寧語（ていねいご）polite language

ます、です。
Just being polite

(2) 尊敬語（そんけいご）honorific language

Someone’s social hierarchy is higher than yours. Or you don’t know the person well, and you want to show your respect.
The sentence implies “Your rank is higher than me”.

例えば私の上司です。尊敬語は、上司のアクションに対して、使う言葉です。
For example, my boss. Honorific language is used for “my boss’s action toward me”.

Let me introduce about my boss at my work
I work at Japanese Company in LA.
I call my boss Japanese yakuza boss. He often implies that if I make any mistake or if I did not meet deadlines, he will kill me.

He is an expatriate who was assigned to work in LA branch only for few years.
Those elite expatriate like him rules our office.

He is interested in only his promotion and golf, it does not matter if female employees are beautiful or not. The important thing is, whether the employee bothers his promotion or not.
I am so scared by him, but at the same time, he is so interesting to me and I can’t stop observing him.

So I will use my boss for example sentences today.

上司が仕事をくださった。（くれた）
My boss gave me a job.

花子「お茶とコーヒー、どちらを召し上がりますか？」Would you like to drink green tea or coffee?
上司「コーヒーをお願い。ありがとう」Coffee please. Thanks.

飲みますか？ is 丁寧語。It still sounds nice, though, 召し上がりますか？sounds much elegant and professional.

Someone who drink the green tea is my boss. “Boss’s action”.

(3) 謙譲語（けんじょうご）humble language

Same as horrific language. Someone’s rank is higher than someone, BUT, lower ranked person stand in the spotlight.

Humble language is used for “My action related to my boss”.
The sentence implies “My rank is lower than you.”

私は上司から仕事をいただいた。
I received a job from my boss.

上司「日本からのお土産のクッキーだよ。食べて」This is souvenior, cookies. Please have some.
花子「一つ、いただきます。ありがとうございます。」I will have one. Thank you very much.

(Someone who eat the cookie is me, lower ranked person. Higher ranked person gave me a cookie, then I, lower ranked person, described my action related to higher ranked person.)

はい、これから、（２）の尊敬語 (honorific language) を勉強します！My boss’s action.

いる・行く・来るー いらっしゃるーいらっしゃいます。(irregular)
見るーご覧になるー ご覧になります。
言うーおっしゃるー おっしゃいます。(irregular)
するーなさるー なさいます。(irregular)
食べる・飲むー召し上がる ー召し上がります。
くれるーくださるー くださいます。(irregular)
寝るーお休みになるーお休みになります。
〜ているー 〜ていらっしゃるー 〜ていらっしゃいます。(irregular)

My boss comes to office at 8am.
上司は、午前８時に会社にいらっしゃいます。

My boss will be staying at office by 12pm.
上司は、午後１２時まではオフィスにいらっしゃいます。

My boss usually come to the lunch room at 1PM.
上司は、普段午後１時にランチルームにいらっしゃいます。

My boss watches Ghibli movies.
上司は、ジブリ映画をご覧になります。

My boss plays golf.
上司は、ゴルフをなさいます。

My boss drinks a cup of coffee every morning.
上司は、毎朝コーヒーを召し上がります。

My boss eat Hamburger at McDonald.
上司は、マクドナルドでハンバーガーを召し上がります。

My boss gives me urgent task occasionally.
上司は、急ぎの仕事をよく私にくださいます。

My boss goes to bed early when he goes to play golf next day.
上司は、次の日ゴルフをする時は、早くお休みになります。

My boss is talking on the phone.
上司は、電話で話していらっしゃいます。

In most verbs, you can say,

お　＋　verb stem + になります。

My boss went home.
上司は、お帰りになりました。

My boss sang at karaoke.
上司は、カラオケでお歌いになりました。

My boss has read Doraemon.
上司は、ドラえもんをお読みになったことがあります。

My boss has used Hello Kitty coffee mag.
上司は、ハローキティのコーヒーカップをお使いになったことがあります。
