アメリカ人のマイケルさんが、日本のIT企業きぎょうで働はたらくと言いう設定せっていの話はなしを３週間前しゅうかんまえに作つくりました。
Three weeks ago I made a story about an American man named Micheal who started working at a Japanese IT company.

そして偶然ぐうぜんなのですが、日本に住すむ妹いもうとのスペイン人じんの夫おっと、ダニエルが一週間前いっしゅうかんまえにエンジニアの仕事しごとのポジションに受うかりました。
Then by coincidence, my sister’s Spanish husband, Daniel, got an engineering position one week ago.

ダニエルは日本にほんに来きて2年ねんですが、日本語にほんごができないので仕事しごとが見みつかりませんでした。
Daniel came to Japan two years ago, but he could not find job because of his lack of Japanese.

だから、この2年は妹が働き、ダニエルが3人の子供こどもの世話せわと家事かじをしていました。
So for the past two years, my sister has been working and Daniel has been taking care of the 3 kids and doing housework.

私は、ダニエルが仕事を探さがしていたことも知しりませんでした。
I didn’t even know Daniel had been looking for a job.

しかし、ダニエルの給料きゅうりょうは日本人の妹の給料の２倍ばい、スペインで働いていたときよりも上あがりました。すごい、ダニエル！
However, Daniel’s salary is twice my sister’s, and also higher than the salary he got in Spain. Good job, Daniel!

そして、これから私は、日本の会社でエンジニアとして働くダニエルの話をこのクラスに使つかえるんですよ！
So, from now on I can use Daniel’s stories of working as an engineer in a Japanese company in this class!

これからのダニエルの活躍かつやくが楽たのしみです！
I can’t wait for his journey going forward!

Potential verb

can , have the ability to do something, or that something is “possible”

Ru-verb
Drop “-ru” and add “-rareru”.
食べる　→　食べられる

In many casual cases, Japanese omit the “ra” here.
食べ　+　れる　＝　食べれる
* It’s called ”ら抜き言葉”　ー　ra-less potential form

Since most Japanese omit the ”ra” for the potential verb, when Japanese people hear ”食べられる”, it sounds like “You are eaten” (Passive: 食べられる).

U-verb
Drop the final “-u” and add “-eru”.

行く　→　行ける

Lesson Point!!

In daily conversation, particles such as “を” and ”が” are often omitted (as well as subjects) when you use potential verbs.

I taught to add “を” or ”が” when we use potential verbs in the Genki 2 lesson, however, we mostly omit “を” or “が” in daily conversation.
It’s appropriate to add “を” or ”が” in formal writing or formal speech.

(例：Example)
”I can speak Japanese. ”

(1) In formal writing or formal speech.
日本語を話はなせる。
日本語が話せる。

(2) In daily conversation
日本語、話せる？
日本語、話せるよ。

Chatting with a Coworker at Izakaya (Japanese Bar)

登場人物とうじょうじんぶつ　(Cast)

マイケルさんーアメリカ人。３ヶ月前さんかげつまえに日本に来きて、日本の企業きぎょうでエンジニアとして働はたらき始はじめました。
Micheal – He is American. He came to Japan three months ago and started working as an engineer at a Japanese company.

愛子あいこさんー同おなじ会社かいしゃの同僚どうりょうで、同じエンジニアです。
Aiko – She is his coworker and an engineer as well.

＜会話かいわ＞
Dialogue

仕事帰しごとがえりに、愛子さんが会社の近ちかくの居酒屋いざかやでマイケルさんを待まっています。
Aiko is waiting for Micheal at an Izakaya near their office after work.

 

愛子：あ！マイケルさん、こっちこっち！
Aiko: Ah, Micheal, over here!

マイケル：愛子さん、お疲つかれ様さま！
Micheal: Aiko-san, otsukare-sama! (Greeting after work. The direct meaning is “You must be tired after work.”)

愛子：お疲つかれ!　今日きょうは仕事しごとどうだった？仕事に慣なれてきた？
Aiko: Otsukare! How was work today? Have you gotten used to it already?

＊(はい、ここであなたなら、何て言いますか？）
(What would you say if you are Micheal?)

マイケル：そうだね〜。まだまだ色々いろいろと勉強べんきょうしないといけないことがたくさんあるけど、みんな親切しんせつだし、少すこしづつ一人ひとりで仕事しごとができるようになったよ。
Micheal: I think so. There’s still a lot of various things I need to learn, but everyone is nice, and little by little I’ve been able to manage by myself.

愛子：そうか〜。それはよかったね〜。マイケルさんは日本語話はなせるからいいよね。日本にきて３ヶ月さんかげつだけど、アメリカが恋こいしくない？
Aiko: I see. I’m glad to hear that! It’s good that you can speak Japanese. Don’t you feel like you miss America after having been in Japan 3 months?

マイケル：いや、まだホームシックにはならないよ。東京とうきょうは刺激的しげきてきで、遊あそびに行いく場所ばしょがたくさんあるし。
Micheal: No, I haven’t got homesick yet. Tokyo is an exciting city, and there are many places to visit.

正直しょうじき、会社の寮りょうはアメリカの家いえに比くらべると狭せまくてびっくりしたけど、慣なれたら全然ぜんぜん平気へいきになったよ。
To be honest, I was surprised that the Company’s dorm is much smaller than my house in America, but I’m completely used to it now.
