今日は日本での、初めてのレッスンです。

日本に帰ってきて、今一週間です。
It’s been one week now since I’ve returned to Japan.
ロスアンゼルスではビーチの近くに住んでいたので、夏は湿気もなく快適でしたが、日本の夏は蒸し暑いですね！
In Los Angeles, I lived near the beach, so the summers were comfortable and not too humid, but Japan’s summers are so humid!
部屋にクーラーはあるのですが、クーラーの音がビデオに聞こえてうるさくなると思うので、クーラーは消してレッスンします。
Although there is air conditioning in my room, I think that it can be heard in the video and will get pretty annoying, so I turn it off and do the lesson.

最近のレッスンは敬語が多かったので、今日はマイケルさんの男友達との会話です。
In recent lessons, there was a lot of keigo, so today will be Michael’s conversation with his male friend.

かもしれません is similar to でしょう・だろう
でしょう・だろう is used when something is probable, likely. There is a good chance.
かもしれません・かもしれない・かも is used when something is not as likely, but still a possibility. It’s like saying “maybe” or “might” in English, with less certainty.
【How to form “かもしれません”】
かもしれません is placed after the short forms of predicates, in the affirmative and in the negative, in the present as well as the past tense.
Short form + かもしれません
雨が降る ＋ かもしれません (It may rain.)
However, “だ” should be removed even if it’s short form.
✖ 彼は日本人だ かもしれません。
◯ 彼は日本人 かもしれません。
There are different levels of politeness:
Formal = かもしれません
Less formal = かもしれないです
Informal = かもしれない
Informal, shortened = かも

友人のたけしとゴルフへ行く
Going to play golf with a friend, Takeshi
たけしは、マイケルの大学時代の友達です。
Takeshi has been Michael’s friend since they were college students.
マイケルがロスアンゼルスで大学生の時に、日本から留学生として同じUCLA (University of California Los Angeles)に通っていました。
When Michael was a college student in Los Angeles, Takeshi was an international student at the same UCLA.
その時からずっと友達です。
They have been friends since.

たけし：おー、マイケル、久しぶり！元気か？
Takeshi: Oh, Michael, long time no see! How are you?
マイケル：元気、元気。たけしも元気だった？
Michael: Good, good. How are you?
たけし：元気だよ。マイケルはいつのまにか子供が3人もいるんだよなー。すっかりお父さんだね。奥さんも元気？
Takeshi: I’m good. You have 3 children before you even realize. You’re already a father. How’s the wife?
マイケル：うん、元気だよ。久しぶりに日本に帰ってきて、うれしそうだよ。どうにか僕も仕事が見つかったし、ひろみは、”専業主婦になれる！”と喜んでいた。
Michael: Yeah, she’s fine too. She seems happy since finally coming back to Japan. I found a job somehow, so she was joyful that she “can be a stay-at-home wife!”
たけし：そうかー。大学の時にマイケルがひろみさんと付き合い始めた時には、「二人は結婚するかもしれない。」と思ったけど、まさか大学卒業してすぐに結婚して、日本に住むなんて思わなかったな〜。
Takeshi: I see… When you two started dating in college, I thought “You two might get married”, but I never imagined you guys would get married right after graduation and started living in Japan.
マイケル：そうだなー。ひろみに初めて会った時には僕には他の彼女がいたしな。ひろみと会って、一生懸命日本語を勉強し始めたんだよなー。
Michael: Yeah… I actually had another girlfriend first met Hiromi, you know. I remember I started studying Japanese to my best ability after I met her.
たけし：あはは。やっぱり、言語を上達させるには、恋が一番だな！
Takeshi: Ahaha. After all in love is greatest motivation in learning a language!
マイケル：そう言うたけしは、最近は彼女いるの？
Michael: That reminds me, do you have a girlfriend these days?
たけし：いや、それが、仕事が忙しいし、全然いない。誰かいい人紹介してくれよ。
Takeshi: No, I’ve just been busy with work and all, so I’m never around. Introduce me to someone nice!
マイケル：えー、いい人ってー。。。あ！そうだ！会社の同僚のあきこさんも、彼を探しているかも。”マイケル、誰かいい人紹介してよ。”って言ってた！
Michael; Ehh… Someone nice… Ah I got it! My coworker, Akiko, might be looking for a boyfriend. She said, “Michael, why don’t you introduce me someone nice?”
たけし：じゃあ、紹介してよ！
Takeshi: Introduce her to me then!
マイケル：そうだねー。じゃあ、おばあちゃんのうちに子供たちを預けて、4人でダブルデートにしようか。ひろみもたまには子供達なしで外に出かけたいかもしれない。
Michael: Let me think… Well, I will ask grandma to take care of the kids, then let’s make it a double date, the four of us. Hiromi may want to go out without the kids every now and then.
たけし：いいね！ひろみさんにもずっと会ってないし。
Takeshi: That sounds good! I also haven’t seen Hiromi in quite a long time.
マイケル：わかった。じゃあ会社のあきこさんを誘っておくよ。
Micheal: All right. Then I will ask Akiko at work.
たけし：楽しみだな〜！お前、いい友達だな！
Takeshi: I can’t wait! You are such a good friend!
