みなさんは、ジブリ映画を見たことはありますか？
Have you seen Ghibli movies?
ジブリ映画の代表作には、”隣のトトロ”、”千と千尋の神かくし”、”風の谷のナウシカ”、”ハウルの動く城”、”天空の城ラピュタ”、”魔女の宅急便”、”崖の上のポニョ”などがあります。
The famous movies of Ghibli studio are, “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Spirited Away”, “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind”, “Howl’s Moving Castle”,”Laputa: Castle in the Sky”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “Ponyo”.
“千と千尋の神かくし”は、ハリウッドのオスカーでアニメ部門で賞をとりました。
“Spirited Away” won an Hollywood Oscar for the animation category.
その映画の中では、日本の自然の神様がたくさん出て来ます。
In the movie, you will see many Japanese gods from nature.
前回、神社とお寺の違いを簡単に紹介しましたが、神社には自然の神様がいて、お寺には昔は人間だった人が祀られています。だから、”千と千尋の神かくし” は神社の話ですね。
In the previous lesson, I explained the difference between shrines and temples, where gods from nature are found in shrines, and in temples are gods who used to be human. So, the story of “Spirited Away” is about shrines.
日本には、自然からできた神様が800万以上いると言われています
It is said that there are more than 8 million gods from nature in Japan.
だから、神様がもっと増えても、全く問題ないのです。クリスマスをお祝いし、神社に行き、お寺にも行きます。
Therefore, it’s no problem that we welcome additional gods. We celebrate Christmas, and go to shrines and temples.
(51) Genki 2 P.100 〜てあげる、〜てくれる、〜てもらう
We learned earlier that the verbs, あげる、くれる、and もらう describe transactions of things. Here we will learn the use of these words as helping verbs. When these verbs follow the te-form of a verb, they describe the giving and receiving of services.
＜〜てあげる＞
We use te-form + あげる when we do something for the sake of others, or somebody does something for somebody else The addition of the helping verb あげる does not change the basic meaning of the sentences, but puts focus on the fact that the actions were performed “on demand” or “as a favor”.
わたしはたけし君に、お金を貸してあげました。
I lent Takeshi money. (To help him)
＜〜てくれる＞
How about くれる
We use くれる when somebody does something for us.
（１）I lent Takeshi money. (To help him)
わたしはたけし君に、お金を貸してあげました。
She lent me money.
彼女は、僕に、お金を貸してくれました。
＜〜てもらう＞
We use the te-form + もらう to say that we get, persuade, or arrange for, somebody to do something for us. In other words, we “receive” somebody’s favor. The person performing the action for us is accompanied by the particle に。
I got her to help me with my homework.
僕は、彼女に宿題を手伝ってもらいました。(Spot light – me)
Today’s Dialogue
“子供達と、ジブリ映画を観る – Watching Ghibli Movie with kids”
マイケルとひろみには、８歳のエミリーちゃん、５歳のジョシュア君、３歳のマリアちゃんがいます。
Michael and Hiromi has three kids, 8-yar-old Emily, 5-year-old Joshua, and 3-year-old.
今日は、エミリーちゃんの誕生日なので、お友達が泊まりに来ます。
¥It’s Emily’s Birthday today, so her friends are coming to sleepover.
そこで、みんなでジブリ映画を見ることにしました。
There, they decided to watch a Ghibli movie.
マイケルとひろみが、どのジブリ映画がいいか、話し合っています。
Michael and Hiromi are discussing which Ghibli movie is good for today’s sleepover.

ひろみ：マイケル、今日、子供達に見せるジブリ映画を決めてくれる？
Hiromi: Michael, can you decide which Ghibli Movie we can show the kids today?
マイケル：そうだな〜。何がいいかな？僕、ジブリ映画を全部見ていないし。
Michael: Hmmm… Which one is good? I haven’t watched all of the Ghibli movies.
ひろみ：エミリー！お父さんに、どのジブリ映画がいいか、教えてあげて。
Hiromi: Emily! Can you tell your dad which Ghibli movie is good.
エミリー：私は、”もののけ姫”が見たい！
Emily: I want to watch “Princess Mononoke”!
ひろみ：あれは血がいっぱい出るからダメ。とりあえず、ジブリ映画、何があるか言ってくれる？お母さん、何があるか忘れちゃった。
Hiromi: It’s too bloody, so no. Anyways, could you tell me the what Ghibli movies there are? Mommy (speaking in third person) forgot what there was.
エミリー：え〜。じゃあ、隣のトトロ、千と千尋の神かくし、風の谷のナウシカ、ハウルの動く城、天空の城ラピュタ、魔女の宅急便、崖の上のポニョ。
Emily: Hmmm, then, “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Spirited Away”, “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind”, “Howl’s Moving Castle”, “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “Ponyo”.
ひろみ：あ〜、そうだ、そうだ。お母さんもまた見たくなってきたわ。お母さんは全部好きだけど、特に、ナウシカ、天空の城ラピュタ、千と千尋の神かくしが好きだなあ！
Hiromi: Alright! I want to watch those again! I love all, though, I especially like “Nausicaa of the valley of the wind”, “Laputa, castle in the sky” and “Spirited away”.
マイケル：僕は”千と千尋の神かくし”を見てないけど、ハリウッドのオスカーでアニメ部門で賞を取ったんだよね。
Michael: Though I haven’t seen “Spirited Away”, I heard it won an Oscar for the Animation category.
エミリー：じゃあ、それにしようよ！
Emily: Then, let’s watch it.
マイケル：あれ、どう言う話なの？教えてくれる？
Michael: What kind of story is it? Can you tell me?
ひろみ：うーん、１０歳の女の子が、日本の神様の国に入ってしまう話かな〜。ちょっと、”不思議の国のアリス”に似てるなあって思った。
Hiromi: Hmmm.. A ten year old girl enters the country of Japanese gods, I guess. I think it’s similar to “Alice in wonderland”.
マイケル：”アリスインワンダーランド” のこと？へ〜、面白いね。
Michael: It’s like “Alice in wonderland”? I see. That’s interesting.
ひろみ：あれは何が言いたい話なんだろう？わがままな女の子が自立して行くって言う話かなあ。あとは環境問題とか？自然にゴミを捨てたらいけないって言うメッセージもあるような。。ちょっとインターネットで調べてみよう。
What was the main plot? Is it the story where a bratty girl becomes independent? Or is it about environmental issues? I feel like there is a message that we should not dump garbage in the nature. Let’s google it a bit.
マイケル：なるほどー。”風の谷のナウシカ”は？
Michael: I see. How about “Nausicaa of the valley of the wind”?
ひろみ：（コンピューターを見ながら）あー、あれも環境問題があるなー。1984年に作られた話だけど、核戦争で高度文明が滅びた後の話だから。なんか、ターミネーターみたい。こう考えると、ジブリ映画って、環境問題や戦争についてのトピックなんだね。
Hiromi: (looking at computer), Oh there mention of environmental issues as well. It’s created in 1984, though, the story setting is that the high tech culture diminished after the atomic bomb wars. It’s like “Terminator”. When I think about it, Ghibli movies focus on the topics such as the environment or wars.
マイケル：へー、知らなかった。天空の城ラピュタは？
Michael: I see, I did not know that. How about “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”?
ひろみ：これも1986年に作られたアニメで、監督の宮崎駿が小学生のときに考えていた話なんだって！ ”ラピュタは遠い昔に滅びたが、かつて高度な科学力で天空から世界を支配した強大な帝国であり、空のどこかに浮いているが、誰も見つけることができなかった”。。。こんな話、小学生が考える？
Hiromi: It’s created in 1986, and the director, Hayao Miyazaki wrote the story when he was a elementary student! The setting is, “Laputa was destroyed long time ago, however, it used to be a enormous country which ruled the world from the sky with sophisticated science. It is floating somewhere still, however, nobody was able to find it”. Can any elementary student create that kind of story?
マイケル：うーん、とりあえず、僕は考えなかったな。友達と自転車に乗ったり、バスケをしたりしてた。宮崎駿監督って小学生の時からすごいね。今日はジブリ映画についてたくさん教えてもらって、よかった。もっとジブリ映画を見たくなっきたよ
Michael: Hmmm… anyways, I never thought about those stuff. I rode bicycles or played basketball. Director Miyazaki was awesome since he was an elementary student.
ひろみ：じゃあ、今日は”千と千尋の神かくし”を子供たちと見たらいいよ！今日のお泊まり会の子供達の世話をよろしくね！
Hiromi: Then, today we’ll watch “Sprited Away” with the kids! Please take care of the kids during the sleepover party!
マイケル：はーい。
