“太宰治は、本当に人間失格”
“Osamu Dazai is really a no longer human.”
太宰治は、日本の昭和初期の有名な作家です。
Osamu Dazai is one of the most famous authors at the beginning of the Showa era in Japan.
代表作には、人間失格があります。英語の本では、No Longer Human と訳されていますが、直訳は、”Disqualified Human” です。
One of his popular works is Ningen Shikkaku. It is translated as No Longer Human, however, the direct translation is “Disqualified Human”.
人間失格は、夏目漱石の”心”の次に日本で売れている小説です。
This Ningen Shikkaku is the second best selling novel in Japan after number one best selling novel Kokoro by Sōseki Natsume.
人間失格を読んだのは、私が１９歳で多感な時だったため、読んだ後一週間くらいは気分が落ち込みました。
I read this book for the first time when I was 19 years old, so I was more sensitive at the time and depressed for about a week.
あれは私小説です。
That book is an autobiography.
小説の始まりは、主人公の笑っている写真についてです。
The story begins with a picture of the main character’s happy face.
”顔が笑っているのに、どこか人間的ではなく、不気味だ。”という感想から始まります
“His smiley face is unnatural, not human and spooky,” it says describing the main character.
お金持ちのお家に生まれて、容姿にも恵まれた彼は、子供のころから人の気持ちがわからずに悩んでいました。
He was born to a wealthy family and is good looking, though, he had been depressed because he could not understand other people’s feelings.
どうやら人が考えていることと、自分が考えていることが違う、と感じていました。
He felt like the way he viewed things was different from other people.
そして、いつも明るくふざけていれば人気者になれることを知り、いつも自分ではない自分を演じるようになりました。
Then, he noticed that he would be more popular if he was a bright and funny person, so he started acting like someone else not himself.
見た目もハンサムな彼は、すぐに人気者になりました。
Since he was a handsome guy, he soon became popular.
ずっと演じているので、やはり虚しくなっていきます。
However, he still felt empty since he was not being true to himself.
人を信じられない彼は、酒に溺れ、いろんな女性と付き合いました。ある日、付き合った女性と心中しようとし、自分だけ助かって女性が死んでしまいます。
He did not trust other people, so he always drank and dated many women. One day, when he and his girlfriend tried to commit suicide together, she died while he survived.
しかしある時、誰も疑わないとても素直な女性を好きになりました。やっと人間を信用できる、と思った矢先、彼女は誰も疑わないために、悪い男に騙されてレイプされてしまいます。
One day, he found a pure and honest woman who never doubted anyone. As soon as he began to trust people, she was raped by a bad man because she trusted him.
そしてその女性はそのショックで、何もかも信じられなくなってしまい、その彼女を見る主人公もやはり人間は信じてはいけない、と思います。
She then changed due to the incident and did not trust anyone anymore. The main character was then assured that he would not trust anyone.
この主人公は、ほぼ作者の太宰治のことを書いています。
This main character is almost Osamu Dazai-the author.
太宰治はかなり女性にモテました。
Dazai was so popular with women.
彼も実際に、付き合った女性と心中しようと思いましたが、その女性だけが亡くなりました。
He actually tried to commit suicide with his girlfriend, but only she died.
その後結婚し、子供二人がうまれましたが、この人間失格が書き終わった一ヶ月後に愛人と心中して亡くなります。
Osamu got married with a woman and had two children together, however, he committed suicide and died with his mistress a month after he finished writing Ningen Shikkaku.
前回の心中では女性だけが亡くなったけれど、今回は女性もそれを恐れて、先に太宰治を殺した後に、一緒に川に飛び込んだようです。
This mistress knew that he failed to die when he committed suicide with his girlfriend before. In order to avoid that, she killed Osamu first and jumped into the river with him.
彼女は、富江というとても綺麗な女性でしたが、太宰のもう一人の愛人が妊娠したことを知り、嫉妬に狂います。
She was a beautiful woman named Tomie. She became jealous when she found out one of Dazai’s other mistresses was pregnant.
だから、一緒に死んで自分のものにしたい、という気持ちがあったようです。
So she wanted to keep him to herself by dying together.
その妊娠しているもう一人の愛人が、斜陽のシングルマザーの話のようです。
It seems like the other mistress was the inspiration of a single mother in another one of his novels, Shayou:The Setting Sun.
太宰は、奥さんがいる上に愛人が二人いて、一人の愛人が妊娠をしている間に他の愛人に心中しようと持ちかける、まさに人間失格な男です。
Dazai had two mistresses in addition to his wife, and when one mistress got pregnant, he asked the other mistress to commit suicide together.
He is really is disqualified from being human!
人間失格な男性は、意外とモテるんですよね。
I know that many disqualified men attract women.
だけどみなさん、太宰の真似するのはやめましょう。
However, everyone! Let’s not do the same thing that Dazai did in order to be popular with women.
とにかく、一度、日本で二番目に売れている小説、”人間失格”を読んでみてください。

日本には、４７の都道府県（一都、一道、二府、四十三県）があります。一都は東京都（首都）、一道は北海道、二府は大阪府と京都府で、その他は静岡県や広島県のように全部県です。静岡県はお茶屋富士山で有名で、広島県には戦争の恐ろしさと平和の大切さを伝える原爆ドームがあります。
日本は南北に長い国なので、南と北では気候が大きく違い、沖縄や九州では泳げる時に、北海道では雪が降っていることもあります。

Japan has 47 prefectures (to-do-fu-ken); one “to”, one “do”, two “fu” and 43 “ken”. One “to” refers to Tokyo-to (the capital), one “do” is Hokkai-do, two “fu” are Osaka-fu and Kyoto-fu, and the other prefectures are all “ken”, such as Shizuoka-ken and Hiroshima-ken.

Verb present form ＋ ように
ように is used when (1) X resembles Y, (2) When X is as Y shows, says, explains, etc, or (3) when X does something as shown / said/ explained / etc. in / by Y.
1. これはチョコレートのように見えるけれど、消しゴムだから食べられませんよ。
It looks like chocolate, however, it’s erase. You can’t eat it.

Japan is a country that is long from north to sough, so the climate varies greatly from south to north, and sometimes it happens that it is snowing in Hokkaido when people are able to swim in Okinawa or Kyushu.
