今日は日本のベストセラー小説、夏目漱石の”こころ”についてお話したいと思います。
Today, I would like to talk about Japan’s best-selling book, Kokoro by Sōseki Natsume.
この本は、1914年に出版されました。
This book was published in 1914.
登場人物は、大学を卒業したばかりの男性の語り手、「私」、私が尊敬する「先生」、「先生の奥さん」、若い頃に亡くなった先生の友人「K」です。
The main characters are “I”, who just graduated from college and the narrator of this book, “Sensei” that “I” admires, “Sensei’s wife” and “Sensei”’s friend K who passed away when they were young.
この本のキーワードは、「人はいざという時に急に悪人に変わるから恐ろしい」と言う先生の言葉です。
The keyword of this book is, “It’s scary that nice people suddenly become bad when necessary,” Sensei said.
本は上中下、の３つの章に分かれており、「上」では、先生が言う言葉にどう言う意味があるのだろう？と私、が先生に興味を持ちます。
The book is comprised of three parts: 上 (Jou)、中 (Chu) 下 (Ge). In “Jou”, the narrator, “I” is interested in Sensei’s words that are not explained.
下は先生の遺書になります。
The entirety of 下（ge), is Sensei’s Testament.
先生は親の財産で暮らしている裕福な人で、いつも書斎で本を読んでいます。
Sensei is a wealthy person who has inherited from his parents. He is always reading books in his study room.
奥さんは美人で優しい女性ですが、「先生はいつも自分に関心がなく、何を考えているか分からない。」と言っています。
His wife is beautiful and kind, but she says, “Sensei is not interested in me, and I don’t understand what he is thinking.”
奥さんの話によると、若い頃に先生の友人Kが亡くなってから、先生が変わってしまった、と言うことでした。
According to her, Sensei’s personality changed after his friend K passed away when they were young.
その答えが、下の「先生の遺書」で明らかになります。
The answer appears in the last part of “Sensei’s Testament.”
先生は、若い頃に両親を亡くしましたが、信頼していた叔父さんが両親のお金を横領していたことに気がつきました。
Sensei lost both parents when he was young. He then realizes that the uncle he had trusted embezzled his parent’s money.
これが、「人はいざという時に急に悪人に変わるから恐ろしい。」と言う言葉の意味になります。
This is the meaning behind his words, “It’s scary that nice people suddenly become bad when necessary .”
遺書はまだ続きます。
The testament continues.
天涯孤独だった先生は、下宿先の奥さんとお嬢さん（のちの奥さん）に優しくしてもらい、だんだんと心が癒されていきます。
Sensei who was lonely without family gradually opened his heart after the apartment owner and her daughter welcome him with kindness.
また、綺麗で優しいお嬢さんに恋心を抱きます。
Then, he falls in love with the owner’s daughter who is beautiful and kind.
ある日、親にも勘当され、お金にも困っていた友人Kを助け、下宿先に同居させ、奥さんやお嬢さんにもKに優しくするようにお願いします。
One day, Sensei’s friend K was disowned by his parents and was left with nothing, so Sensei allowed K to live with him and asked the owner and her daughter to be kind to him.
友人Kは次第(しだい)に心が癒されていきます。
K’s depression heals little by little.
しかし、友人Kは、先生が恋していたお嬢さんとどんどん仲良くなっていき、先生は嫉妬し始めました。
However, K falls in love with the owner’s daughter and gets closer to her, so Sensei becomes jealous.
友人Kは、お嬢さんに恋したことを先生に打ち明けます。
K tells Sensei that he fell in love with her.
二人の仲を阻止しようと先生は、友人Kに、”精神的に向上心のないものは馬鹿だ”と言い、Kを精神的に傷つけます。
Sensei tries to separate them, so he tells K, “You are stupid that you are not trying to improve yourself” to hurt his feelings.
そして、先生は、奥さんにお嬢さんとの結婚の約束をしてもらいます。
Then, he asks the apartment owner to approve of his marriage with her daughter.
それを知った友人Kは、先生を責めることもなく、ある日、自殺してしまいます。
Friend K commits suicide knowing that they were going to get married but without blaming Sensei.
そして、またあの言葉を思い出してください。
Now, please remember Sensei’s word,
「人はいざという時に急に悪人に変わるから恐ろしい。」
“It’s scary that nice people suddenly become bad when necessary .”
これはおじさんのことでもあり、先生自身のことでもあるんです。
The words were not only about his uncle, but also about Sensei.
最後に、「妻が生きている間は、このことは内緒にしておいてください。」と遺書が締めくくっています。
At last, he writes in the testament, “Please keep it a secret while my wife is still alive.”
遺書を読んで、「私」は慌てて先生のところに走っていきます。
After reading his testament, “I” ran into Sensei.
先生が最後に自殺したのかどうかは、書かれていません。もしかしたら「私」が自殺を止めたのかもしれません。
The book does not say if Sensei commits suicide or not. Maybe “I” stopped it.
この本は、伏線が張り巡らせていて、次々と回収される緻密なストーリーです。
It is a tightly plotted story with many episodes foreshadowing the events to come.
だから、上中下を読んだ後に、もう一度上を読むと、はっきりと先生の言う意味がわかってきます。
So if you read the three parts, 上, 中, and下、 and go back to 上, you will understand the Sensei’s words.

Since I have to practice for chorus club every night, I always start studying after 10 pm.
(Note: you can say either “勉強をする” or”勉強する”. It’s same.

日本には昔からの名所もたくさんあります。例えば、兵庫県(ひょうごけん)にある姫路城(ひめじじょう)は日本で最も美しいと言われているお城で、1993年にユネスコの世界遺産に選ばれました。
Japan also has many famous historic sites. For example, Himeji Castle in Hyogo Prefecture was declared a Heritage site by UNESCO in 1993.

言われる(passive) ー to be said. In this case, it means “Himeji Castle has been called the most beautiful castle in Japan.”

Its white walls still remain after 400 years, and the building’s shape resembles a bird called shirasagi (white egret) resting with spread wings, so it is also called Shirasagi Castle (or Hour Castle).
姫路城は昔の映画やドラマを撮影(さつえい)する時によく使われています。
