語学ごがくは最初さいしょに覚おぼえることがたくさんありますが、単語たんごは覚おぼえていますか？
Although there are many things to learn at the beginning, do you still remember your vocabulary?

これからは、クラスの初はじめに、単語たんごのテストをしましょう！

Today, we are learning
(1) Topic particle は
(2) X があります、います

＜The Topic Particle は＞

The topic particle は works as “X is …”
The topic particle は also works as “As for X, … is …”
You know the Particle “は” as,X は Y です。
X is Y.
However, the topic particle “は” need not be the subject of a sentence.

Ex.)
ジェニファーさん、週末しゅうまつ　は　たいてい　何なに　を　しますか？
Jennifer, what do you usually do on the weekend?

“は” promotes time expressions as the topic of each sentence.
“Let’s talk about weekends. What do you do on the weekend?”

Ex.)
今日きょうは　東京とうきょう　に　行いきます。
I’m going to Tokyo today.

昼ひるご飯はんは？
How about lunch?

食たべません。
I will not eat.

食たべます。
I will eat.

Ex.)
Why don’t you watch a movie with me today?
今日きょう、いっしょに　えいが　を　みませんか？

Sorry I am busy today.
すみません、今日きょうは　いそがしい　です。

How about tomorrow?
あしたは？

＜X が　あります・います （dictionary form ある、いる）＞

Both ありますand いますmeans “There is (are)~”, however, when X is living thing such as people or animals, we say います, not あります。

Ex.)
There’s a McDonald’s over there.
あそこに　マクドナルドが　あります。

There is a girl over there.
あそこに　女おんなの子こが　います。

But, if you have a doll that you really like, you might want to say,　います。
There is stuffed animal on my bed.
ベッドの上に、ぬいぐるみ　が　あります。

There is my Pooh bear on my bed.
わたしのプーさんがベットの上にいます。

あります　（Own something）

テレビがありません。
I don’t have TV.

時間じかんがありますか？
Do you have time?

あります　(Event take place)

火曜日かようびにテストがあります。
There will be an exam on Tuesday.

あしたは日本語にほんごのクラスがありません。
There will be no Japanese class tomorrow.

います (when you want to present a person)

学校がっこうに留学生りゅうがくせいがいます。
We have International students at school.

います (you have family, friends)

日本人にほんじんの友達がいます。

There is a bank over there.
あそこに、ぎんこう　が　あります。

There is a dog over there.
あそこに　犬いぬ　が　います。

I have a car at home.
いえに　車くるま　が　あります。

There is no weekly lesson on 5th Sunday.
