川端康成は、日本で初めてノーベル賞を取った小説家で、芥川龍之介とも友人だったようです。
Yasunari Kawabata is the first Japanese novelist who received an award for his novel. He was friends with another famous writer, Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
１１歳のときに両親ともに結核で亡くなり、祖父、祖母の家で暮らすことになります。そのためか、とても繊細(せんさい)な子供でした。
His parents passed away due to T.B (tuberculosis) when he was 11 years old, so he started living with his grandparents. Probably due to the loss, he was very sensitive child.
有名な作品に「雪国」があります。
One of his famous writings is, Yukiguni.
その小説の始まりは日本人なら誰もが知っている一文です。わたしの好きなフレーズの一つです。
Many Japanese know the first sentence of the story. It is one of my favorite phrases.
「国境の長いトンネルを抜けると雪国であった。」
“When the train went through the tunnel where was located on the border of the prefecture, snow world appeared.
この一文だけで、わたしの目の前に、静かで綺麗な白い風景が浮かび上がってきます。
When I read this one sentence, a quiet and beautiful white view appears in front of my eyes.
真っ暗なトンネルを抜けた後で、白い雪の風景が綺麗に見えるのだと思います。
I think the white snow stands out after the train went through the dark tunnel.
『雪国』の舞台は、新潟県にある湯沢温泉がモデルになっています。
The setting of theYuki-guni is Uzawa hot springs in Niigata prefecture.
国境というのは、普通は国と国の境目のことですが、ここでは群馬県と新潟県の県境のことのようです。
“kokkyou” usually mean “national border”, however, here it means “prefecture border” between Gunma and Niigata.
あらすじはこうです。
Story goes like this.
親の遺産で自由気ままに暮らしている文筆家の主人公 島村は、汽車で雪国へと向かっていた。
The main character Shimamura inherits his parent’s asset and does not need to worry about money, so he went to the snowy countryside by train.
汽車の中で、病人の男を見かけ、彼に付き添う恋人のような若い娘に心を惹かれる。ふたりは、島村と同じ駅で降りていく
He fell in love with a young girl who supported a sick man in the train. They got off at the station where Shimamura also got off.
島村は妻子持ちでありながら、一年前に初めてこの温泉町に訪れたとき、芸者の駒子と出会い、愛人関係になる
Shimamura has wife and their children, though, he has mistress called Komako who is Geisha. He met her a year ago when he visited this hot spring village.
島村は温泉宿に何度か長期滞在し、駒子のことが好きだったが、東京に妻子もいるし、駒子と生活を共にしようとは思っていなかった。
Shimamura stays at the hot spring hotel for a long time several times. He has feeling for Komako, however, he has a wife and kids in Tokyo, so he was not going to live with Komako.
電車で見た若い女性の葉子と駒子は知り合いのようだった。
Yoko whom Shimamura saw in the train and Komako knew each other.
島村は駒子を褒めるために「いい女だな」と言ったとき、駒子は泣いて怒りました。彼女は、「彼の都合(つごう)のいい女だ」という意味に取ったようでした
Shimamura said, “You are an attractive women” to Komako to praise her, however, she cried and got upset because she believed she was only a “convenient woman for him”.
島村は遠い新潟まで一年に一回愛人の駒子に会いに行きます。
Shimamura visited far away Niigata to see his mistress Komako once a year.
その上、葉子という女性にも心が惹かれます。
In addition, he has feelings for Yoko.
この話は、川端康成の私小説と言われています。
It is said that this story is Yasunari Kawabata’s autobiographical story.

Anyway, please close your eyes.
あなたは電車に乗って窓の外を眺めています。雪はありません。群馬県は新潟県よりも暖かいです
You are looking outside from window on the train. There is no snow. Gunma prefecture is warmer than Niigata prefecture.
電車が群馬県を通っていた時には窓の外には雪はなかったのに、長くて暗いトンネルを抜けたら、新潟県に入っていて、外は真っ白な雪景色に変わりました。
Although there was no snow when the train went in Gunma outside from window, however, after the train went through long and dark tunnel, it crossed the border between Gunma and Niigata, and the view suddenly changed to white snow world.
なんか素敵じゃないですか？
Isn’t’ it beautiful?
川端康成の文章は、日本語の使い方が美しいと言われていますので、ここであらすじを申し上げたところで、「雪国」の良さは伝わらないと思います。
People say that how Yasunari uses Japanese is beautiful, so I can’t convey how good the “Yukiguni” is even though I told you the plot.

マイクさんが、友達の勇太に出身地について聞く
Mike asked his friend Yuta about his birthplace.
マイク： ね、勇太って、どこの出身？
Mike: Hey, Yuta, where are you from?
勇太： 北海道。田舎(いなか)だけど、自然が多くて、とってもいい所だよ。
Yuta: I’m from Hokkaido. It’s rural, but it’s a great place, with a lot of nature.
マイク： ふーん、北海道って気候が厳しいって聞いたけど。
Mike: Hmm… I heard that Hokkaido has a rough climate, though.
勇太： うん、冬は雪が多くてとても寒いんだ。でも、夏はすずしくて、気持ちがいいよ。梅雨(つゆ)もないし。
Yuta: Yeah, in the winter there’s a lot of snow and it’s really cold. But the summers are cool and feel great. There’s no “tsuyu” either.
マイク： え？何がないって？ごめん。
Mike: Huh? There’s no what? Sorry.
勇太： ああ、「つゆ」。雨がよく降る季節のこと。本州では5月の終わり頃から7月初めまで、雨がたくさん降るんだけど、それを「梅雨」って言うんだ。湿度が高くて、あまり気持ちのいい季節じゃないんだけど、北海道にはその梅雨がないんだ。
Yuta: Ah, “tsuyu”. It’s the season when a lot of rain falls. On Honshu, it rains a lot from about the end of May to the beginning of July, and they call that “tsuyu”. It’s very humid, and it’s not a very pleasant season, but we don’t have “tsuyu” in Hokkaido.
マイク： ふーん、そうか。ところで、北海道の名物って何？雑誌にはラーメンがおいしいって書いてあったけど。
Mike: Hmm, really? By the way, what’s Hokkaido’s local specialty? It said in a magazine that the ramen are good.
勇太： うん、ラーメン、うまいよ。そのほかにも、寿司とか魚とか肉とか、ジャガイモもうまいし。
Yuta: Yeah, the ramen are great. Besides that, things like sushi, fish, meat, and potatoes are also good.
マイク： いいね。なんでもおいしそうだね。
Mike: That’s cool. It sounds like everything’s delicious.
勇太： もし、夏に北海道に行くんだったら、東北地方(とうほくちほう)までいって三大祭り(さんだいまつり)を見てみたらいいよ。
Yuta: If you ‘re going to Hokkaido in the summer, you should also go to the Tohoku region and try seeing the Three Great Festivals.
マイク： へえ、三大祭りってどんな祭り？
Mike: Wow, what kind of festivals are those?
勇太： 秋田(あきた)市の「竿灯(かんとう)祭り」、仙台(せんだい)の「七夕祭り(たなばたまつり)」、そして青森市(あおもりし)の「ねぶた祭り」。
どの祭りもすごいスケール！毎年、日本だけじゃなくて、海外からも観光客がたくさん来るし、とても人気のある祭りだよ。
Yuta: The Kanto Festival in Akita, the Tanabata Festival in Sendai, and the Nebuta Festival in Aomori. All of these festivals are on an incredible scale! They’re really popular festivals. Many tourists come every year, not only from Japan but also from abroad.
マイク： へえ、それは面白そうだね。僕も見てみたいなあ。
Mike: Wow, they sound interesting. I’d like to see them, too.
勇太： うん、絶対、おすすめ！
Yuta: Yeah, I absolutely recommend it!

あなたの国にも梅雨はある？：ロスアンゼルスは2月に雨が多く降りますが、湿気はないので「梅雨」ではないです。
３）勇太くんの出身地の名物は何ですか。あなたの出身地の名物は何ですか。
ラーメンとか寿司とか魚とか肉とかじゃがいもです。
わたしはいま埼玉に住んでいますが、名物は、草加せんべいです。
草加は場所の名前で、せんべいは米でできたお菓子です。
４）東北地方はどこにありますか。４ページの地図で探して、県の名前も言ってみましょう。
青森県、岩手県、秋田県、宮城県、山形県、福島県 です。
５）東北三大祭りというのは、どんな祭りですか。
東北三大祭りというのは、秋田市の「竿灯(かんとう)祭り」、仙台市の「七夕祭り」、そして青森市の「ねぶた祭り」のことです。とても人気がある祭りで、日本だけじゃなくて、海外からもたくさん観光客が見にきます。
